About Us

Building a First Class Lift
Takes a First Class Team

Inclined Elevation Inc.
is staffed by talented individuals who are individually and collectively committed to building excellent inclined elevators. This team has over 100 installations of collective experience and are responsible for dozens of advances in lift design and installation procedures since 2004.

John Weinstein, Ph.D. started building lifts in 2004 as the President, Builder, and Co-Owner of Canadian Hillside Lifts. After developing much of their product and installation processes he left Canadian Hillside Lifts in 2005 and, in 2006, started Inclined Elevation Inc. In order to foster the research and development of inclined elevators he takes a hands-on role in all aspects of the design, manufacture, and installation of every inclined elevator we build.

John works with each prospective client to find the best on-site location and to provide them with a clear picture of what the completed lift will look like, explanations for any options recommended, cost, and all other information. He then works with the fabrication and installation teams to ensure that the finished product matches the customers expectations.

John's doctorate is in computational theoretical particle physics. His research on the properties of two meson systems predicted the existence of two "molecular states" statew where 2 (themselves ephemeral) quark-antiquark systems are energetically bound to each other. This interpretation of two particles cleared up questions unsolved in 30 years of study. He later adapted a non-relativistic eigenvalue quark model to explore meson-meson scattering via quark exchange and short-lived meson resonance formation, a model that the Group Theory Leader of CEBAF claimed "was how everybody would have to do meson physics"). As a University Professor he also taught students in courses from Pre-Med Physics to Engineering Physics to graduate level Electromagnetic Theory.

In addition to his forays into academia, John has always loved making things work and has run a machine shop to completely rebuild a poorly maintained, poorly run paper converting factory, has worked as an apprentice aircraft mechanic, has rebuilt aircraft, cars, boats, and houses, and has designed and built industrial buildings.

Frank Legere worked for John as Welder/Fabricator when John was Co-owner and Lift Builder at Canadian Hillside Lifts.  Frank has been a welder, metal worker, entrepreneur, inventor, patent holder and brings that wealth of experience to Inclined Elevation. He builds 20' foot sections of track, car frames, car dollies, and almost all the other required components in his Bracebridge shop. Frank's ideas and insights have been the essential ingredient in many innovations including crafting an emergency overspeed braking system with John in the spring of 2005 as Canadian Hillside Lifts. As a previous business owner he has also been essential to the development of the business side of Inclined Elevation.

Tom Townsend finishes the cars, carefully cutting, sanding, finishing and mounting the wood onto the bare frame. Each car has about a 1000 individual components and Tom's commitment to excellence and detail is evident in each project.

Scott MacDougall started with Inclined Elevation in the fall of 2008 and has stepped into the role of lead installer. Scott is a Bracebridge native who is a millwright, tool and die maker, motive power mechanic and a man completely committed to understanding and continually improving all aspects of our lift building. From his first day on the job Scott has done nothing but excellent work, raising the bar for safety and quality, and has already made suggestions that have led to significant design simplifications and improvements.

Matthew Haley began building lifts in the spring of 2008 and will be back on the hill this year after completing his B.Sc. in Physics at the University of Guelph. Matthew is an awesome lift builder who, over the period of building 6 lifts in 2008, moved from the junior installation team member to leading the installation of a 215' four station lift last season. He brings pride of work, a keen mind, an artisans hands, and an academic background that complements Scott's field experience.

Dennis Anderson is an installer who, like an operating room assistant, makes Scott and Matthew look good by knowing what's coming next before they do and having the tools or supplies ready before they realize they need it.
